Welcome!
If you're here alone... you're not alone. You have arrived at the virtual welcome mat of the Significant Other's Society. SOS welcomes you with open arms, minds, and mouths (um, did she say "mouths"?) We want to hug it out, think it out, and talk it out (there you go). Oh, and how could I forget the ever popular drink it out. Now, gimme your keys.
Quick intro: I'm engaged to a 3rd year medical student and currently we both live in Miami Beach, FL. But this blog is not only for South Florida's Significant Others. Thanks to blogging magic, we can connect to any Significant Other from Saskatchewan to Spokane to San Diego (shout out to my hometown! Oh how I miss it...)
Moving on...
What's my motivation? As a Significant Other (SO) myself who relocated to be near her overachieving med student boyfriend, I know that sometimes you can feel as though you're on a rocky road... which ironically, is exactly what I have found myself pint-deep into on more than one Saturday night when my (now) Dr. McFiancee had been on call, studying for a shelf, or stuck at the library. Is it wrong? No, it's delectable and the marshmallow goodness makes me happy. But it can get boring and, in addition to the flab, can pack on major guilt with a side of paranoia that the next time Dr. McFiancee does have time to hit South Beach with me, I'll feel more like I belong in Orlando. At Sea World.
And though I'm really not one to recommend against ice cream (let's be real people, Ben & Jerry should enter sainthood), the Significant Other's Society could offer you some darn good TLC, too. It's your vehicle to vent, meet some fabulous people, plan delightful outings, laugh, think, get advice from other SOS members, ask questions, and essentially, find in this blog some well-deserved solidarity in your not-well-deserved solitude. Even if your SO is studying, working, on call or post call, seemingly ad infinitum, there's no reason we should feel alone. There's a LOT of us. The AMSA website says they've alone registered about 67,000 members. At least a handful of them have got to be going steady.
And though superbly marvelous things occur when your Significant Other is in the medical profession, some instances do call for the airing of grievances. Please remember to use discretion here, folks. There's some things we just DON'T want to know. Oh, and please keep our blog clean. Let's all pretend we're ladies and gentlemen here.
This life is an adventure for us all. Won't you join us?
Small print/Legal note (which I'm sure someone will tell me is necessary): Neither I nor this blog in no way represent any medical university anywhere. There would be entirely too much red tape for me to navigate, and I don't have that much patience. This blog is for support and entertainment and purposes only. Not in that particular order.
